Navel Orange; Week 15

Well, we're home and settling back into our routine. The 2nd trimester is treating me well and we're looking forward to some cooler weather.

Baby No. 2 is now the size of a navel orange, his or her ears and eyes are settling into place. Mama is doing well too. Morning sickness is taking more and more of a backseat everyday and my headaches are slowly easing up. I am starting to feel more normal.

Last week we took a family vacation to Alaska with a stop in Victoria, British Columbia. I'm sure some thought we were crazy for taking our 18 month old with us, but we had a blast and surprisingly we were quite relaxed. We brought Nana along for the ride and she had a great time too.

We took a cruise out of Seattle, Washington and sailed to Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan, Alaska before making a stop in Victoria, British Columbia. We didn't do much in Juneau since the weather wasn't too great, but we walked around the town and saw about 4 or 5 bald eagles.

In Skagway we went dog sledding and it was fantastic. Yes, we took Zack along and he more than loved it. After our sledding we were given the opportunity to meet our dogs and pet them. Two of our dogs ran the Iditarod last year. Zack and I both got in there giving our dogs lots of love. Next, we headed back to the camp where we held 6 week old puppies. I tried to sneak one out in my jacket but it didn't fly. Haha. Afterwards we stopped for a beer at a local microbrewery before heading out to do some shopping. The town was so cute and the views were amazing.

Our third stop was in Glacier Bay. As you can imagine, the temperature dropped quickly as we slowly made our way to the largest glacier. There was ice floating about in the water and once I saw the glacier I took the opportunity to yell - mostly at Tim - "ICEBERG straight ahead!!!!" Seeing the glaciers, while they are amazing, breathtaking and beautiful, are kind of like seeing the Grand Canyon. You walk out, you see it, snap a few pictures and then ask yourself "now what?"

Ketchikan was my favorite stop of all - minus the dog sledding. We took a trolly ride through town and up to a Salmon Hatchery. Along the way we made a stop at a salmon ladder and watched as those (not so little) guys made their way upstream. Next, we made a stop at a rainforest and walked out toward the water. It was breathtaking. While out there our tour guide pulled two starfish out of the water. While on the rocks and taking pictures, Tim and I spotted a sea otter. Then we loaded up and headed to the Salmon Hatchery where we saw a black bear walking through the hatchery and into the water where he grabbed himself some lunch. It was so great. We headed back to the main part of town after that, but on the way we saw several eagles nests - which were huge - and eagles. Both Nana and Zack were tired, so we got them back on the ship, then Tim and I headed back out into the town to walk it and see what we could see. Ketchikan rains 300 days out of the year, but not that day! We had amazing weather. The town was beautiful and again, the views were breathtaking.

Our fourth and final port of call was Victoria. It was the worst spot as far as organization when you're coming off the ship, but one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. We didn't have much time in Victoria as we docked at 6pm and had to get back in time to put Zack to bed - although he went to bed late that night. We didn't do much but walk around and snap pictures....and of course did some shopping. Even though it was a bit of a hassle, we made our way back through to make sure Zack got his first stamp in his passport. Which no one ever asked to see by the way.....we had to seek them out for the stamp.

When we were on the ship we would hang out in various places. Mom and I would go play cards in the card room or we'd take Zack into this tacky lounge that no one was ever in. The lounge had a dance floor and disco ball, which Zack LOVED. In one corner it had some video games, which of course Tim and I were into. There was the casino, when it was open, and the Duty Free shops. Then there was the food. I ate so good. I wish I was still on board so I wouldn't have to cook! Most nights, my mom would watch Zack while Tim and I went out. A couple nights she went out with me or Tim for some music and drinks.

All in all, we had a great time. I am so glad we did it and cannot wait to go on our next vacation. Who knows, maybe we'll do a small one next year. Till then, we are looking forward to our trip on the Polar Express Train in November.
